A little administrative update to pass along..

Starting in with the month of December, the birthday cards that Customer Rewards Members have received in the mail in the form of a postcard will now be delivered via email. We have chosen to move to this for a number of reasons. We feel that if there is a way to be more environmentally friendly while keeping up with technological advances that are available to us, then we should be taking advantage.

So any Customer Rewards Member who has provided our database with an email address, will receive their birthday card via email. These customers will print their card and bring it into our store. The cashiers will scan the barcode, which becomes null and void after the scan, and presto! You have redeemed your birthday card!

Those Customer Rewards Members who have not provided us with an email address will still receive their postcard in the mail, as they have in the past.

Probably the easiest project. Save some empty water or milk jugs and color fun faces on them. Cut out the bottom of the jugs and place over a string of holiday lights. LED will be safest for heat, or you could put a battery operated candle under each one.

The Fall Festival has come and gone. We had a great time getting together with the community for a new twist on a classic event. This was the first time that we brought in a showcase of local artists and crafters, this addition was a huge success! Kids had fun decorating gourds, getting their faces painted by the amazingly talented folks at Rainbow Party Arts, throwing strikes at pumpkin bowling and enjoying the bonfire. A sample of the best pictures of the day are below...

We're currently busy planning the events for the rest of the year...Deck the Halls, Ladies Night, Spruce Tip Workshops and the Holiday Showcase! Stay tuned for more details

Fall Festival

It is that time of year again! Time for our Fall Festival! There will be a lot of fun to be had for the entire family.

A new feature of the Fall Festival will be a showcase of local artists! We are very excited about the opportunity to support our local artists throughout the community. Do you know any local artists that may be interested in taking part in the showcase? We've already got some photographers, oil painters, candle makers and makers of garden accessories. If you make it, we'd love to show it off! Local artists will be selling their items on site.

If you are an artist or know someone who might be a great fit, please get in contact!

Finally, join us for the Fall Festival on Saturday October 1st, starting at 10am. Kids activities will go until 1pm and other events will go until 3pm.

What's Blooming in Your Yard?

What's blooming in your yard?

Hydrangeas, my oh my, aren't the Annabell, Endless Summer and, new this year, the Bell Anna, looking so fine? These are nice to have in that part shade garden spot. The Quickfire Hydrangea is starting to show color with its big white blooms that change to red as the season goes on. Daylilies are in full bloom now as are Liatris and Coneflowers and other perennials.

The spireas are almost done blooming and can be tip pruned which will allow time for them to re bloom yet this year. Ninebarks and Dogwoods can be pruned too. Deadhead the roses that have gone though a rapid bloom period because of all the heat and rain. This will give them the jump start to bloom more.

All plants can profit from a nice boost of fertilizer now. Make sure you follow label instructions as to not fertilize anything dry. When fertilizing with a liquid fertilizer there is a chance of burning the roots so lightly water first and then fertilize second. Add a oz of vinegar to a gallon of water to help some that are not looking so good, it will naturalize the water and soil. City water has a lot of pH in it, so if you add vinegar to the water every other week this will help. Dry fertilizer is another good option. This will not show a fast response to the plants color but will work longer than liquid fertilizers.

There are lots of bugs and diseases that are happening this year. Believe it or not, it is not your fault, but rather a response to the weather we have been having. Getting rid of fallen leaves so as to not spread to the plants and winter over in soil. Spray with fungicides in the morning or later evening is best. Preventative spraying in the spring is advised. There are several safe products out for bug control so stop in and let us help you with the best product for your plants.

A few weeks ago, as we were consolidating space and plant material in the store, a huge group of pots, baby veggie and herb plants made their way into an empty spot in the store. Our fabulous greenhouse gang planted it all up and began looking after the crops! We've officially got an indoor garden. A few weeks later, this is what we've got.

When all is said and done, the idea is that we would be able to harvest the "fruits of our labor" for our customers. Whether that all comes to fruition, remains to be seen; but at this point, it is certainly looking good. As those ideas continue to develop, stay tuned!

Happy 1st day of Summer. Whether the weather decides to agree with that statement might be a topic of discussion. Planting time is still going and the shrubs and trees are just happy to go from our place to yours. We have many perennials and hardy shrub roses still available.

I am sure you have noticed that this year the bug and leaf problems have increased considerably than in past years. If your plants are young and do not have the root system on them they will need to be treated. Keep in mind that once the leaf is chewed on or discolored from a disease it most likely will not return to its normal shape or color very soon. Please bring in a sample of what you are having problems with and we will try to help you with the proper treatment.

Putting down a systemic insecticide is a very good idea and it is time to do so if you have not already. Adding root stimulator to your water will help any new or sad looking plants.

It’s Never Too Late to Start an Herb Garden!

Herb gardening is fun and easy. It can provide a great variety of foliage, texture and it doesn’t require a lot of space! You can start an herb garden in a small garden bed, in a patio pot or even in a hanging basket.

If you can ever remember a time that you’ve gone to the spice rack/drawer/etc in your kitchen and realized you were out of a certain item, then it might be beneficial to start an herb garden! Herbs can be grown from seed or you can purchase herbs from your local nursery, such as Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery. We carry a wide variety of herbs: basil, chive, cilantro, dill, lavender, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, spearmint and thyme.

This is a picture a customer sent us of her herb garden. She has oregano, cilantro and basil in a patio pot on her deck. Notice the mulch in the pot. This will really help her out on hot hot summer days when she forgets to get out and water, the mulch will help to keep the soil cool and prevent it from drying out faster. Also notice the little flowers on the oregano, in the top left of the picture, time to pinch that oregano!

Herbs do not need a lot of fertilizer. Plant your herbs with a good fertilizer mixed in with the soil at the beginning for best results. Keep in mind that the more fertilizer that is added, can change the oils in the plants which give them their flavor. Be sure to check the individual plants for watering specifications, but generally most herbs prefer a dryer soil, unlike a tomato that prefers to have moist soil.

Harvest your herbs in the morning, to avoid warm weather shock. Plants should only be harvested when there is enough remaining foliage to maintain growth. Regardless of if the herbs will be used fresh or dried to be used later, they should be washed in cold water after being pinched off of the plant.

If you are looking to dry your herbs, hang them upside down after washing to allow the water to evaporate. Remove the lower leaves from the stems and tie the bunch together with a rubber band or twine at the stems. Be sure not to overcrowd your bundle of herbs, as they need proper ventilation to be able to dry out. You’ll want to find a dry and dark place for the herbs to dry out, a place that is temperature warm but not humid. Herbs need between 1-3 weeks to fully dry out. The herbs are done drying out when you can crumble a leaf between two fingers.

Store your dried herbs in an airtight jar. Remove the leaves from the stem and place them in the jar. They can be kept whole or finely crushed between your fingers. They can be kept for about a year. Happy Herbing!

Earth Day!

Celebrating Earth Day, better late than never. Rather than celebrating Earth Day on the traditional 2011 date of April 27, this Coon Rapids middle school chose to celebrate it closer to the end of the school year with warmer weather. We were along for the ride to help with green tips, gardening tips and the actual planting of the flowers and shrubs on the property. Each class period throughout the day had a different activity to participate in. Some groups planted flowers, pulled weeds around the building and picked up brush and debris from a nature trail. Other groups picked up trash on the premises and prepped and planted shrubs.

All in all, it was a very fun and successful day. The weather stayed clear and beautiful and all of the students stayed involved in the task at hand. They even learned quite a bit about planting flowers! Below are some pictures of our day..

The Time For Planting Is Here!

Planting time is here and we at Lynde Greenhouse have a huge variety to choose from.

The annual flowers are blooming and are something most gardens can't be without. They provide color all season long in both garden beds, hanging baskets and pots.

The perennials are plants that come back year after year. There have been those few that are not doing that this year as I myself am experiencing to my dismay. Daylilies, Peony, Iris, Hostas, Astillbe, Coreopsis and the list goes on are classified as perennials. These plants, although they do not bloom as long as the annuals do, come back each year. Mixing seasonal perennials (those that bloom in spring, summer fall) with annuals are a very popular trend for successful bed gardening.

The trees and shrub planting time is here and we have an array of them to fill your yard with. We also have Fruits to fill your yard; Blueberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Strawberries, Grapes, Currant, Gooseberries and Serviceberry. Also 5 varieties of apples to choose from (Honeycrisp, Sweet 16, So Sweet, Harolred and Fireside). Northstar Cherry and Mt Royal Plum, 2 varieties of Pears too.

Spring is Almost Here!

Hey! I thought this was May. It was snowing on my way into work this morning. As much as we are all antsy for nice weather, we really need to be patient this year. As much as I want stuff out of the greenhouse so I can space other plants, the weather is not cooperating. The last thing you want to do is take a plant out of a 70 degree enviorment and put it right out side with 40 degrees and wind. Not a good combination. Yes, this year is a little colder than usual but for the most part it is closer to how are Springs are. So don't rush into putting plants out just yet, especially tropicals. Hold off on your veggie gardens also, unless youre doing cold crops. The tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants will not be happy with you. Remember the old saying, "do as I say not as I do." Even I'm not doing any planting right now or any big pots just yet. I may seriously wait till the end of the month. At least till the night temps stay in the 50-60s and the day temps stay above 60. Other than that the plants look awesome this year and they'll be here waiting for you when the weather warms up.

Perennials, Trees and Shrubs.

We have the plants for you to plant. Now if only the weather would settle down and warm up and stay nice it would make for a fun day of planting.

The perennials are popping and so are the shrubs and trees. My Magnolia Tree is just starting to get color. Looks like cotton balls on thems so my granddaughter says. I feel the weather has not been the best for the buds of fresh new plants and be careful when planting of them. Tonight and tomorrow look like to be the nights we will have to watch and then after will be ok to plant for the perennials. The trees and shrubs are ok to plant now and will be happy to be in your new home.

Happy Earth Day!

I wish I could tell you to get outside and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine on Earth Day 2011...but the weather is telling me another story.

My ideal Earth Day would be in the 60s and sunny so I could eat lunch and dinner outside, maybe throw a ball around and play catch and top it all off by playing in the garden. Planting some pots up or a tree and picking up the inevitable garbage after the snow has gone away are some great ways to make a difference on Earth Day, or any day for that matter.

If you don't have the ability to get out and pick up trash or plant something in the ground there are a lot of other ways you can be a part of this day. It is the little things that make a difference. Do you turn off the water while you brush your teeth? How about while you take a shower? Do you use the end of water bottles or Fido's water dish to water your plants or just pour it down the drain? Do you have high efficiency light bulbs? Are your walkways lit by lights that are solar powered? Do you have a garden (when weather permits) that you plant veggies in? Do you unplug your cell phone, laptop, etc device chargers after you're done charging them? If it is daylight...turn the lamp off! There are so many ways that you can make a difference and get involved, everyday!

Trees and Shrubs are HERE!

Wow, this weather is something else. I just can't seem to make heads or tails of it but my Dad once told me that when Easter is late, Spring is late too. He has been farming for years and says it always seems to work out that way. He says we have been spoiled by the early springs in the past so feel we need to have them all the time. With more snow in the forecast, it looks like this Spring is turning out to be a late one.

As the trees start to bud and put on their new growth, so do the trees and shrubs we have at the nursery. Some look like nice and plump like the Pussy Willow trees and shrubs. The Magnolias look so full and ready to burst! The Forsythias are getting a ting of yellow on them. Stop in now for a great selection of the trees, shrubs and fruit trees and plants.

This year I am getting staggered deliveries so stop back and see what is new on a weekly basis. The trees and shrubs, although the weather is cool, can be planted NOW. As the ground warms and turns on the glow the plants will start to show growth right before your eyes.

A Fresh New Look

Spring is just around the corner, and we think that just about everyone is ready for it to finally arrive! A time when the sun shines later into the evening, kids are outside playing and taking Spot for a walk doesn't require hat and mittens.

Big things have been happening at Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery lately. Our landscape team has designed and built this amazing display and landscape consultation area in our retail store. Make sure that the next time you're in, you take a few minutes to stop and check out this new area. It is sure to generate some new and exciting ideas for your own outdoor space.

When all is said and done, the new landscape consultation area will be a great place to take a break and let your ideas come together for your own projects. Many of our landscape design consultations will be held here, where a multitute of textures and concepts will fall into place. Since a trip to Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery isn't complete without the whole family, take advantage of the seating area and free wi-fi to make for an all around memorable experience.

Time to Prune the Apple, and Other Fruit Trees.

Now is the time to trim your apple trees, flowering crabs and any other fruit bearing trees. Trimming them now is easier than when the leaves are on. This is the best time prune them to prevent any diseases or wounds entry for bugs. I know the compost center does not open til April but if you can trim now and just keep the pile of branches for a few weeks you can bring in the trimming then. Rule of thumb NEVER trim more then 1/3 of the tree. This is very important in fruit trees for if too much is trimmed off the tree will try to reproduce the lost branches which is what is replaced with water sprouts. These branches grow straight up and produce NO fruit or anything but take up space in the tree. These must be removed and keep an eye as to not cut too close to the trunk so as the cut can heal over. If the tree is too big to trim on your own, please get help so as to prevent any accidents from happening. Please stop in at the Nursery if you have more questions on proper pruning.
The greenhouse is coloring up and we can't wait for April when we will be open for the season.

Welcome December and the rush of getting things done before the end of the year. We at the greenhouse have been busy selling Balsum and Fraser Fir Trees. Roping, boughs of White pine, Norway Pine, balsum, douglas fir, and arborvitae mix. Spruce tips and wreaths. The poinsettias are very lovely this year. We have lots of reds in many sizes and other colors in the single regular size.
Santa is stopping in on Sat. to have his picture taken with whoever seems to want to sit and chat. Deck the Halls Dec, 4 from 1-4. photo booth and door prizes drawings will be going on. Treats and cider too. Look to see you then.

Spruce tip, garland, boughs.

Welcome to the fall/winter season. We have a great selection of Spruce tips in bundles of 5 or 10 in the 24-36". The 48 in are sold singley but look great mixed in with the med. 24" size. We also have window box size. Boughs of White Pine, Norway Pine, Cone Cedar, Cedar, Yellow tipped Cedar and more. We also have Rose hips, Red twigged dogwood stems and more. Pine cones of 4 sizes and kinds.

Don't forget the Poinsettias. They are the best ever. Reds in pixie, singles, doubles and triples and Tree form. Oh they are so nice. We also have 10 other colors to choice from. Stop in and take a peak.

Great time to plant. This time is one of the best times of the year to plant. With the cooler nights plants are setting roots for fall. Trees enjoy this time to spread there roots and get settled in for fall and soon to be winter. We still have a good variety of trees, Sugar Maples, Ironwood, Blue Beech, White Spire Birch, Several types of Lindens and Hackberry a great tree to replace the Ash. Evergreens are happy planted now and bring color to our yards all year round.
Remember the best time to plant a tree Was 20 years ago, the 2nd best is TODAY.

Back from the fair. Enjoyed all who came and saw us there. It was a beautiful day and one that lots came out to enjoy.

Yes it is a great time to plant those perennials. We have lots to choose from with a great half price deal on them too. Soon to be fall is a excellent time to divide and rearrange your perennial beds and we have lots of things that you need for this. Plants, compost, peat moss, and root stimulator. All make for a successful garden.

State Fair time.

Hi. We will be working at the State Fair this year at the MNLA area outside the Hort building this coming Saturday from Noon to 3:00pm. Come check it out.
Greetings from the Nursery. I am sure all are enjoying the wonderful summer weather. Looking around here I see plenty of color. The mums are in bloom. The dwarf sunflowers are blooming as are other flowers in the greenhouse.
Outside we have a sale on perennials that gives you a great deal on them at 50% off. Now is a great time to plant perennials with the time to set roots for fall and become happy in your yard. Soon we will have bare root Peony's with the offer to you to purchase bare root verses potted for a cost affective save. Trees and shrubs are now 30% off. No pruning or fertilizing of perennials, shrubs, or trees is recommended til it freezes. Fertilizing of annuals is a giving at this time of year. Be careful not to fertilize any plant when it is dry for the change of burning the roots is very high when one does that. Water well and water deeply.

The mums have filled the greenhouse.

We've got the mums in and they are blooming. Great fresh looking fall arrangement as well as plants spruce up your pots. No hardy perennial mums this year but plenty of the fun fall mums are here.
Soon it will be time for fall garden work. Trimming off old flower head on perennials is good to do now to keep them blooming longer. Soon your spring blooming plants like Iris and peonies can be dug up and divided. Other fall bed care can be started. Amending beds with peat moss and compost is always a good thing to do at this time. We will be caring bare root peonies for a short time in early Sept. so keep an eye out I will post when they are in.
With the recent weather has brought more leaf problems to peoples attention. Some can be taken care of with the application of insectied or a fungicide. In lots of the cases it is a 2 year process to get rid of the problems once it starts. Disposing of problems leaves so as not to have the problems over winter in the leaves and spread to next year. Preventative action is always best. When in doubt just ask. Remember to bring in a ample size sample when bring one in. A sample of a leaf attached to the branch is best. A foot long if possible and a picture too. We will help with what we can.

Warm days of summer are here. Plants are blooming and as long as it is grown in a pot it can be planted any time in the ground. We are getting yet another shipment of Hydrangeas this week. It will be Thursday. A few Autumn Blaze Maples and some other trees as well as a NEW barberry you just have to see. Mums are starting to color up and Pat has been stocking the store with them as they color up. Rudbeckia (blackeyed susans) and looking oh so fine. Hackberry, Redmond Linden and Blue Beech trees are all 50% off. These are great trees for shade and quick growth. We also have some nice clump Japanise Tree Lilacs in too. We just got in a new shipment of shrubs and some trees too. Hydrangea Trees and shrubs. The shrubs are now all 25% off til Friday. The weather has turned on the damp side for a bit but will dry up and become warm again. May Night Saliva and Cardonna Saliva are now in full bloom; they are the deeper purple flowers spikey looking. Peonies are almost done blooming,and yet their foliage adds a nice visual interest all season. Nepeta Walkers low is the lavender purple flower that is blooming now with bluish foliage. Weigelas are in bloom too and can accent most any yard. Our shrub roses are in full bloom with mixtures of colors and heights to choose from. Please remember to water and fertilize all your plants though out the entire growing season for best color and flowers.
Now to the nasty bugs that seem to be invading some of the trees and shrubs. I have had several people in within the last week with Nipple Gull on Maples and Hackberry. The good thing is it will NOT kill the tree but it will stress the tree. Clean the leaves up in the fall and destroy, this pesky bug overwinters in them. The best and easiest treatment is to treat with BONIDE Tree and Shrub Insect control with systemaxx. This is the same product you can use for the Emerald Ash Borers too. Easy and affective applied now or sooner. Mix in a gallon of water and water in 2 feet away from the trunk of the tree and that's it. With the weather as it has been fluctuating plants are bound to get something if not cared for properly.
Remember the Best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago the 2nd best time is NOW.

As the weather warms the time for planting is here. We at Lynde Greenhouse have a wide assortment of plant material that is in full bloom right now and ready to be planted. Today is Arbor Day and a fine day it is. The trees are in add as a added plus are on SALE til Friday the 23 of April. We are caring lots of kinds to fill your yard. Fruit trees too are on sale too and we have Apples, Cherry, Plum and Pear to choose from. Flowering crab trees as well as other smaller ornamental trees.
Perennials are getting ready and we are slowly bringing them down from the greenhouses to the sales lot. We have 6 greenhouses full of perennials so I hope I have enough. But time will tell. Some of the peony's are blooming and the bleeding hearts are in bloom too. Stop in and check us out.
In the greenhouses we have annuals blooming, Clay pots and other things for your yard. We also have Bulk soils and mulch for your to purchase or have delivered.
The great scare on the Emerald Ash Borer is something that has not hit our town yet. We at Lynde care about our customers and will try to answer questions you may have. The product to treat your tree with is in and can be applied now. It is very simple just mix with gallon of water and poor around the tree base. Emerald Ash borer is a tricky bug it attacks not only sick trees but healthy trees as well so if you want to keep your trees (which I am sure you do) please keep em healthy and treat them with Bonide Annual Tree & Shrub insect control. This needs to be done yearly unless you have someone inject with injection product which can last up to 3 years at best. Or you can do what I am doing since I now have 4 large 30+ year old Ash trees in my yard I am deciding which I'd like to keep and which one is going first and planting something new.

All are busy here at the Greenhouse getting things ready for the big day of March 29. I am sure you have the urge to get out and plant with the weather being so nice but please wait a few more weeks to do so. I say the time to start yard work is when all the snow is gone and then wait 10 days and then if it doesn't snow its OK to do things in the yard. Until then you may come in and browse and see what we have. One thing that all can do is plan what you'd like to plant or have planted by us. Trees can be trimmed now but be careful not to try anything out of reach. The Maple Grove compost center will be opening real soon. Easter lilies and showy Hydrangeas and Tulips will be ready for Easter. Keep us in mind and if you have any question please do not hesitate to call or stop in.

Plants & shipments are coming in daily now. Lots of plants getting planted and greenhouses getting filled up. The Easter lilies are showing their buds and will be blooming by the end of the month. Daylight savings is a week away and spring is around the corner. This will be a busy year caring for plants all the way until Christmas. We're planting more fall mums this summer then we ever have. So we will go through spring right into summer and fall with no slowing down until Christmas. Get your garden plans going; it will be here sooner then you think. I'll be back with updates the next time I get a brake from watering and planting.

Well the time is here at the greenhouse when all are active at getting all the plants potted up, sowed and what not. Just getting everything ready for our spring opening. The baskets are being filled with plants, the pots are being filled with plants and the greenhouses are getting filled. So much to do before we open up at the end of the month. Perennials are getting planted up and starting to look good too. Pat is getting the store all spruced up with lots of new and fun things. You will be so amazed when you walk in the door. Easter lilies are getting nice as well. Well, there just so much to do. Must get back to work. I will try to keep you informed on the new things happening. Or just call or stop in end of March and see for yourself.

The Sun is Out!

What a beautiful day with the sun shining-even though it's soooo cold outside. It was -4 degrees F when I left my house this morning. That sun though just brightens up the day and makes it a little more cheerful! The other day a huge piece of ice/snow fell off the roof and smashed the Sumac outside my window. It scared me out of my seat and I'm hoping it'll come back this spring. It's a Tiger Eye Sumac and always gives off a lot of great color during the growing season!

Well here we are with a new year upon us. And boy do I wish I was still in Maui. The Easter lilies are coming along. Most all of them have emerged and are about 5" tall so far. Easter Mums and Hydrangeas are in and getting greener every day. We have also received spikes and our Pillar Geraniums for this season. Things are still on the slow side for now. We won't be getting busy till sometime in February. I will be writing up our Lynde Design receipts for those that will be planting them in March. That way they'll know where the plant placement is in the pot. It's also time to look through your plant catalogs and start planning and ordering. Keep dreaming of warm summer days.

Well another year is soon to end and a new one to soon begin. The garden center is finishing up for the season and will be closed from Wednesday the 23rd of December until spring. Us growers will be taking a small break but not for long. We have Easter Lilies growing and in a few weeks a few other spring plants will soon be arriving. As for me I'll be relaxing on the beaches of Maui for a few weeks then back to the greenhouses to start next spring's planting. Then before you know it, the busy season will be upon us once again. Spruce tips are in and at a great price now til Friday they are at $16.99 compared to $19.99 a bundle of 10. Other greenery is also available to add to your pots. We do have already made up pots or can do up special orders as well. Stop in now while the weather is nice and enjoy putting your pots together.
Winter will be here before we know it and with winter come cold and snow. Several products that work well into the winter are still available and able to be applied. WILT STOP is applied as a evergreen protector against winter burn. Another product that works well and will NOT wash off is called 'This 1 Works' it protects your plants from the unwanted pest we get over the winter. Great to be sprayed on Burning bushes, apple trees, evergreen, arborvitaes and anything else that the pesky varmets eat on over the winter. This product goes on and has to ware off the plant. It will not wash off. And it does work, so give it a try.

Fall is here and as the season progresses into winter we here at the nursery must get things put down for the winter. So it is up to you to come in NOW to get the end of the season sale on the plants we have outside. All trees, shrubs and perennials will be put to bed at the end of this week. If the last few days haven't felt like fall it will really feel it the next few nights. Cover your mums for longer blooms or bring inside for the night. Liquid fence has a product FreezePruf (we have it) that can be sprayed on and will do the same as a sheet or bring your plants inside. This it to be applied now. Another product called "This 1 Works" works great as a repellent for deer and rabbit. It is applied now or within next week or so. Won't wash off so will protect your deer and rabbit loved plants from them. We have this product too. I have tried it and have had great success with it.
Tree wrap and root stimulator are something to add to your fall list of to do. Lots to do. We have perennials, trees and shrubs at a whopping 75% off so stop in now for the great deals.

Now is the time to do any perennial dividing, if you have some overly large hostas, Stella D' Ora lilies, so on. Don't forget your fall decorating. Corn stalks, straw, gourds, pumpkins, flowering cabbage, Indian corn. Nows the time before it's to late. Be sure to water trees, shrubs, perennials up until it freezes. We will be having our spruce tip workshop on Saturday November 7th at 10:30 am. Be sure to bring your garden gloves and hand pruners with you. Please call to sign up for the class prior to the date. This years fee is $45.00 includes all materials for a basic 12" spruce tip pot, a few extras and the class. Limited to 20 people. See you there!

Yes Fall is on its way and so are the prices. All Trees, Shrubs and Perennials are now 50% off. Now is a great time to plant, along with the cooling off of the night temps the plants are now getting ready for winter so all the buds for spring are set. Just plant and water accordingly and you will be pleased in the spring to see your plants take off. Do NOT do any shrub, tree pruning as of yet. Wait til after a good freeze before you do any type of major punning of shrubs. Wait til after November to trim on your trees as well. With the great weather we are having it is a fine time to plant and apply a dose of Root Stimulator to your newly and any other plants that need it. This will help put on the good roots they need to make it through the winter. So plant and watch it grow.

It's the time of year when we start planning next years crop. The mums are starting to wind down for us now. There will be a few left for sale in the store but not for long, so don't wait too long. We are planning some winter season workshops, and before we get started, we would like to hear ideas from all of you. We typically have held these workshops around the first week in November on Sat. mornings at 10. Let us know when you would have time (day of the week and time of day) to stop in for a 1 hour workshop, what projects you're interested in, and what price would be a good value to you. Hi again.
The weather has been just great for growing. We have a fine selection of shrubs, perennial and now even larger shade and ornamental trees. August is a real good time to plant and look at what has been planted and tend to your gardens and yards. Root growth on plants form well in the late summer and into the fall so well. Watering isn't as much but still a must for newly planted plants all the way up to the end of the year. Remember just because you have a sprinkler or it has rained doesn't mean you have been giving your plants adequate water and care the first year. Just like a young child or pet needs more care at first so does a perennial, shrub, tree and annual plant. Trimming off old flower heads on perennial, annuals and shrubs helps encourage new flowers. Remember to prun plants and fertilize plants only up to the middle of the month of August. Leaving enough time for plants to harden off for winter.

Wow! where has summer gone. Fall mums are now available along with flowering kale and cabbage. We also have a nice selection of Zinnias, Grasses, and a fresh crop of annuals that can last through fall. Poinsettias are growing and will soon be on their way. Next will be spruce top deco. It just never ends. A few of us will soon be going over what we will be bringing in next season, for 2010. There are a few new items in the store now, just ask about them. I hope you all have had the time to enjoy your gardens and all the hard work you put into them this year. Now is the time to plan for next season, while it is still fresh in your mind. Don't forget your fall combo pots or if you would like to create your own, we have lots to chose from.

Prunning of spireas and other plants.

Greetings,
Now that you have been enjoying your summer, continue the view by trimming your plants to keep them pretty. The Spireas that are now done blooming can be trimmed to a nice globe shape as well as other shrubs that have bloomed. Dead heading your old flower heads on perennials encourages more blooms like on Roses and Echinacea and Coneflower, Salvia and other flowers that look a bit brown right now. We at the nursery are still stocked with a variety of perennial and shrubs to help make your landscaping nice. We at Lynde Greenhouse also enjoy helping you with the planning of your landscape needs. Remember we handle bulk mulches and rock and soils too.

Insects in the Garden

Wow! What a weed...I mean week. I hope most of you got an opportunity to make some really great purchases during our 50% off everything sale. It was alot of fun and I know I was extremely happy with my purchases. I have to remember to thank the people that knew it was a great idea. Now comes the giant task of restocking and bringing in fresh product for summer. We still have some great sales every week so if you are not signed up for the e-mail subscription be sure and do it right away to know what's happening. Better yet, keep up with the Lynde blog.

Lots of things are happening in my gardens at home. There has been a small amount of damage on my roses from the little green caterpillar. He likes to make lacework of the leaves. I've also noticed some rose chafers in the flowers themselves. I usually just hand pick them and drop them in a bucket of soapy water. Using a systemic insecticide (one that becomes part of the plants sap system) is the easiest way to protect roses from insect damage. If the plant appears to be overrun with insects try using the insecticide EIGHT.

One caterpillar I am extremely fond of is the monarch. I have planted several different milkweed plants (egg laying and food source plant) to encourage them to my gardens. Yesterday, I counted 9 young larva one one plant! Today I went to get a photo of them and there wasn't one left. As I stood there, dumfounded and bummed, a big red cardinal flew down from the spruce tree and landed on the milkweed. I guess he was looking for dessert! Now that I Know who is stealing 'my' Monarch babies I will put up a protective net to keep them safe.

Well summer is now upon us. Or is it? By now most of you should have most everything planted that you wanted. Now it's adding here and there where there are open spots or where something just didn't do well. Or maybe it's coming in for those great sales you just can't pass up. As for us we are planting and growing fall mums and yes poinsettias are in and are on their way to rooting for the holiday season. As far as new arrivals, we have summer 2.3qt annuals along with some 1.5pt summer annuals that will also work well into the fall season. We still have a fresh assortment of herbs for your cooking pleasure. With in a month I'll have some fall combo pots put together and the product as well if you are interested in creating your own fall pot. Don't forget the fall kale and cabbage for that super accent in your pots or ground beds. Got to get back to those poinsettias.

Hello. My name is Wendy Thomas. I am new to Lynde Greenhouse and Nursery, but not new to gardening or working for a nursery. Like many others at Lynde, I have spent a lifetime doing what I love for a living. All the employees are what you might say "in their element". They are knowlegable, passionate, and eager to help you succeed in all your gardening and landscaping endeavors.
Over the next few weeks, my goal will be to share some of what is going on in my own garden and landscape, as well as here at Lynde Greenhouse, so you can continue to enjoy your gardens, lawns and landscapes. Greetings gardening friends. We here at Lynde Greenhouse are still stocked here with plants for you to plant outside in your lovely yard. As most know summer can be hot and troublesome on plants. Proper watering and fertilizing is still a must. Some plants that have bloomed can be trimmed to promote a fuller plant. Prunning now will allow it to form buds for next year flowers. Dead heading perennial flowers is a good thing to do to. With the rise in temp the last week it has helped some plants but caused others to wilt and get a dose of sunburnt. Water in the early morning and mulch the roots to keep moisture there. Don't overwater in the heavier soils. Fertilizing can be added weekly at a half dose rate of Miracel Gro or Miracid depending on water ph and plant type. Keep on planting and if you have any questions please don't hestitate to ask.

Well every thing would be great if this weather would corporate for us. Plant material is flying out the door. Just what I like to see. Not to mention it makes my days go easier when I have less plant material to care for. But I too have not planted my containers yet. I have put some hanging plants out, but now that their predicting frost they will be brought back in. I have planted cold crop veggies but not any of the warmer crops yet. We got our fall mum plug plants in. Those will be getting planted up this week and ready for sell in August. Poinsettias will be coming in shortly to grow for Christmas. It's just a fichus cycle. Well maybe summer will be here later this week and we can get on with our planting. And for those of you who might of been a customer of Lazaroff Gardens, I am a Lazaroff and are now growing for Lynde Greenhouse. If there are plants your looking for and we don't have please let me know and will try our best to fit it into our plantings to accommodate you. Time to get back to the plants.

Hello again, Spring is on the way and it will warm up soon enough. So lets start planting. We have lots of new and yes the old standbys as well of the trees, shrubs and perennial. Amending your soil with compost and peat moss every year is a must. We supply both along with our own potting soil mix bagged and bulk mulches and soils as well. We also have bagged mulch and soil too. The roses have been on sale and are flying out the door so to say. We have great specials every week starting on Saturday morning and goes Thur Friday evening. Also have the great Tuesday special too. Root stimulate your evergreens and anything that took it a bit hard over the winter. Fertilize with Mir acid starting mid June. We all are here to help so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Until another day.

Hello from the store and shrub lot. We have been busy getting things ready for you! A great Arbor Day week of tree sales went well. This week the Evergreens are all on sale, so stop in for great sales. We are offering something new this year with Weekly Specials and Tuesday ONLY sales. It is going great! With the rain we just received, it is greening up and plants are starting to show color. Remember to water the evergreens- hold off on pruning the winter burn that many of the evergreens have experienced this past winter. Wait until the end of May when the new buds will come out and fill in before you know it and any pruning done now will only cause stress to the plants. A dose of Root Stimulator or Fish Emulsion will help those that look a little peeked. Pansies are still the safest plants to go out now but we do have a great selection of lots and lots of other plants in sizes and colors. So stop in and see.

Hopefully this nice weather were having is here to stay. Lets keep our fingers crossed. The plants are busting at the seems in the greenhouse. Everything is looking awesome. Still planting lots of 306 packs and 1204 packs of annuals. So far our Lynde Design combo planters are looking great this season. I just hope we can move them out quickly before they need a hair cut. This warmer weather means more watering for me. Would be nice to get 1-2 days of cloudy so I can get some plant maintenance done. There is always more than just watering and keeping the plants alive. Well back to the grind. Stop on out and start planning your gardening and wishing you all good success this gardening season.

The nursery lot is now filled with wonderful plants. With a total of 5 different deliveries the nursery lot is full. Come and look and shop. They are all ready to go into your yard and make it look great. Perennials are on the slower side and will not be out for a few weeks. We are caring a large selection of tree, ornamental as well as shade and evergreens in a array of sizes. Lots of new types as well. I am real happy with all we have and am sure you will be to. Enough of this snow! Is it not Spring already. Well alot has been going on these past few weeks. We have our 1st Lynde Design combos done and ready to plant and the 2nd planting will be done this week. Things are sure on their way in the greenhouse. Now if the temps would warm up we could start moving the product. I've been watering and pinching and maintaining the plant material so all is grand when you walk through the doors. Easter Lilies are blooming and Spring is definitely in the greenhouse if not outside. The Garden Center is now open, so pop on in and get inspired while waiting for the weather to cooporate. Everything is alive and growing for the 2009 Spring season at Lynde. When you do start to plant this Spring be sure to acclimate the plants to the outside weather for a few days. Remember they've been in a 70 degree greenhouse with no wind to burn them or bruse them. Like us, they don't like going out into cool temps and wind with out getting hardened off. Also keep in mind to pinch of the buds of any flowers that you plant so that the energy goes into the roots and not the flowers. That will help them get established much more quickly. And as much as I know you all want to get yard work started...don't! The grass in not growing yet and the ground temps are still cold. You could do more damage to your yard if you start raking it to early. The root system can get pulled out and damaged from raking to early, especially with using a metal rake. Just be patient a little longer. Just because it's Spring doesn't mean the weather says it is. Time to get back to my babies...until next time.

Yes, you read it right, we are opening again for the season on April 1st. As you see from the really nice video that the plants are getting well on there way. Weather today is rainy and could do with some sun but it will be nice again. The store is filling up with lots of new product. Remember to hold off on the raking in the bed for at least a good week. Topping off your bed this spring with Lynde's Compost is a great jump for the new plants to be planted or ones that are already planted. I like adding organic fertilizers that do not burn the plants. Wait until after the 15th of MAY before adding products like Miracle Grow or Miracid. Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces. Until then...think green.

Well at least the weather forecast says it is. The greenhouse is a busy place getting things ready for spring sales. The plants are filling up the store along with the other products we sell. Pots are already on display outside for you to see. We will be officially open April 1st but we will welcome you if you arrive before that. Remember the ground outside is still real cold as are the plants roots so don't go overboard with the rake before ALL the snow is gone and then 10 days past. Our staff is a great one with loads of knowledge so please feel free to ask if you have any questions. Until next time.

Well this past week was a busy planting week. Lots of baskets and patio pots were planted up. I'll be starting to tape up a few pillar geraniums this week. I say spring is coming because it is or at least it is at the greenhouse. We are planting up so many perennials it is really nice. All look so healthy and will produce wonderful plants for you to grow in your yard. I've had a busy two weeks of seminars and learning events so by next week I will be so full of new info it will be nice. Looking forward to the warm 40 degree weather I keep hearing about. It will be nice soon enough. Call or stop in as the plants are greening up.

Well another week over and more to come. Next week will be a busy planting week and plant arrival week. Got the first set of seed geraniums planted this week. We'll be getting the pillar geraniums staked in the next few days. Easter Lilies are looking awesome and right on schedule. We have some new employees to train in these next few weeks as well. Now will be busy and before we know it, it will be Memorial Day. See you soon!

What's with this 5" of snow, I thought it was just to be around 2". Any way, the greenhouse is hopping. Been busy this past week planting lots of annuals. From 4 1/2" to patio pots. Should have tropicals in to plant soon, if the truck from Florida ever gets here. Starting to seed a few items as well. Plants are arriving weekly now, which means we're in full swing. Sure feels good to be back in a growing routine. Could do with out the running around with your head cut off and long days, but what a boring job this would be with out the hectic passe. What a satisfaction there is at the end of the growing season. Well got to get back to the watering. 'Tis the season of water hose attached to hand. Check back for arrivals and what's going on behind the scenes.

It snowed...again! I guess we shouldn't be surprised as Minnesota weather does this almost every year to us. We've been busy planting in the greenhouse and getting excited for the warm weather to come, but then another blast of winter hits us. The sun is shining; so it's as though the snow and cold are just a joke that will pass soon. As I write this, I look out the window and see how cold and frigid the greenhouse looks. However, on the inside, it’s quite the contrary! There are a lot of little green plants and plugs which are covering our benches! Perennials are coming

Another week closer to spring. We have been planting up some old and new varieties of perennials this week. I received some more signs for spring and am looking forward to more warm days: if only in the greenhouse for now. The snow is a bummer for us but still good for the plants outside. Keeping them covered for another month yet will be good for them. We have a few nice days and all want to be outside. We all have the itch. Well, until next week.

What a great feeling these few warm days have brought. And just think, daylight savings is only a few weeks away! Well the plant material is starting to roll in. We have a busy week ahead of us for planting. The Easter lilies are looking great and the Hydrangeas are starting to set buds. Annual Begonia baskets will be next on the list to plant along with a few tropicals and Geraniums. Keep the warm temps coming and we'll see you next week.
